What is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is the removal of the nerve inside the tooth. This is usually due to the entry of bacteria into the center most part of the tooth called the dental pulp ("nerve") chamber. Root canal therapy involves the removal of the entire nerve system, and cleaning and filling the resulting space in the nerve chamber.

What are the indications for a Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp of a tooth becomes irreversibly inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes:

  • Deep decay
  • A fracture or chip in the tooth
  • Injury to the tooth
  • Cracked or loose filling
  • Repeated fillings in a tooth
  • Gum disease

  • Spontaneous pain or throbbing
  • Pain while biting or chewing
  • Extreme sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Inflammation
