Orthodontics

What is Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment changes the positioning of your teeth and in so doing improves the appearance, function and dental health. It may also enhance facial appearance and how your jaw muscles and joints function. Using braces, retainers or other devices to apply gentle pressure over a period of months or years, your teeth can be moved into the desired position. Some problems that are suitable for treatment by orthodontics may be developmental, such as those caused by the early loss or prolonged retention of baby teeth or by differences between upper and lower jaw growth. Orthodontic problems may also be caused by accidents or behaviors, such as finger or thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting. Depending on the severity of your problems and the treatment prescribed, you may experience some initial discomfort when the braces are first applied or as the braces are adjusted.
