BriDgesWhat are the indications for a Bridge?
What does a Bridge appointment involve?
It will take two dental visits to prepare and insert your bridge. During the first visit, the dentist will begin by administering local anesthetic. While waiting for the anesthetic to take effect, an impression of the area will be taken. This impression will be used to make your temporary bridge. A shade for your bridge will be selected. If the bridge is for your front teeth, custom shading may be required. Once you are numb, the dentist will prepare and reshape your teeth in a very specific way in order to maximize the retention and esthetics of the bridge. To prepare your teeth, the dentist will reduce the adjacent teeth that will act as anchors for your bridge. This will allow room for the bridge. After your teeth are prepared, the dentist will take an impression using putty-like material. The impression is then sent to the laboratory to be used for fabricating your bridge. Once the impression stage is complete, a temporary bridge will be made and cemented with temporary cement. The temporary bridge is placed to protect the teeth and gum tissues between visits. The laboratory usually requires two weeks to fabricate the bridge. At the second visit, your temporary bridge and any residual cement will be removed. The bridge will be tried in and evaluated for fit, shape and colour. If all of these factors are perfect, the bridge is permanently bonded in place. How should I take care of my Bridge?
Bridges are designed to look, feel and function like your natural teeth. Therefore, it is important to brush, floss and see your dentist regularly. Since it is not possible to floss between the replacement tooth and the attaching crowns, it is necessary to use floss threaders. Floss threaders allow you to access the spaces between the bridge and the adjacent teeth and gums. To prevent damaging or fracturing your bridge, avoid chewing hard foods, ice or other hard objects. You also want to avoid grinding your teeth. With proper care you can expect your bridge to last many years.
